Global Programme of Action – World Water Week 2006

World Water Week 2006 – Stockholm, Sweden, August 20 to 26, 2006

The theme for the 2006 World Water Forum was “Local Actions for a Global Challenge.” That theme reflected the understanding that water-related problems have their greatest impacts at the local level and that local responses are essential to ensure that international commitments on water are met. In our efforts to meet international commitments, we must remember the intrinsic links that exist between freshwater and oceans. Oceans have become the final destination for municipal sewage and solid waste, chemical discharges from factories, fertilizer run-off, and other pollution, much of which is transported to oceans by streams and rivers. The effects of this pollution are detrimental to the biodiversity and productivity of the marine environment.

While at World Water Week in 2006, Stakeholder Forum worked with UNEP GPA to undertake outreach and conduct dialogue with stakeholders to ensure that the IGR-2 will gain from the experience and expertise of a broad range of stakeholders. As part of that effort, SF produced an introductory issue, World Water Forum Special Edition August 2006, and four companion issues, all found below.
